Psychoeducational Assessments

Overview

Psychoeducational assessments are comprehensive evaluations that aim to understand an individual's learning abilities, cognitive strengths, and weaknesses. These assessments involve a series of tests and observations to identify learning disabilities, emotional issues, or developmental delays. By analyzing the results, professionals can provide tailored recommendations and interventions to support the individual's educational journey. Ultimately, psychoeducational assessments help ensure that every learner can achieve their full potential.

What Happens

Your child will participate in a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment designed to better understand their developmental profile, learning abilities, and support needs. This type of assessment is commonly used to explore the presence of neuro-developmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Intellectual Disability (ID), Specific Learning Disabilities, and other related conditions.

Assessment Process

The assessment is completed by a clinical or educational psychologist and involves several components:

  • Clinical interview with parents to gather detailed developmental history, current concerns, and daily functioning.

  • Standardised questionnaires and rating scales completed by parents and educators to understand how your child functions across different environments (e.g., home, school).

  • Cognitive testing is used to evaluate areas such as memory, attention, problem-solving, and reasoning.

  • Observational assessments and play-based interactions to assess social communication, behaviour, and emotional regulation.

  • Diagnostic assessments (ADOS-2 and/or MIGDAS-2) are administered where relevant, to gather structured observations around social interaction, language, and play.

  • Screening for co-occurring conditions, such as anxiety, sensory processing difficulties, or learning disorders.

Differential Diagnosis

The assessment process involved a differential diagnostic approach, which means we carefully considered multiple possible explanations for the difficulties observed. In children, it is common for symptoms to overlap across different conditions (for example, both autism and ADHD can involve attention challenges and difficulties with social skills). By comparing patterns of behaviour, developmental history, and how your child responds in different settings, we can determine which diagnosis or combination of diagnoses best fits your child’s unique profile. This method helps ensure the diagnosis is accurate and meaningful—not just based on a single behaviour or symptom, but on the full picture of your child’s strengths, challenges, and developmental history.
